I love the day after Valentine's Day because of all of the sales! You can find so many trinkets, treats, and goodies to save for the next year. Did you know that most stores donate their decorations to teachers and other community organizations? This year I contacted my local Target to see what they planned to do with their cute little signs that hang from the ceiling. They said just what I wanted to hear, "We give them away to teachers and other community members from non-profit organizations." I also contacted a few other stores who were not able to give away their signs, but it was definitely worth asking. It probably varies depending on the location and management, but it never hurts to ask...you never know!

Valentine's Day
I don't know about you guys, but our Valentine's day was pretty fast and furious! Here are a few of my favorite things from today.
Today we had an appointment with Mrs. Smith's Class (Rachelle) to Skype, but due to technical difficulties with my computer we couldn't complete the conversation. Rachelle, we must reschedule soon, and for those who haven't ventured into the world of Skyping-you should! The possibilities are unlimited!
A volunteer (the grandparent of one of my students) came to read "Sugar Cookies" to us today. The kids sat with such contentment as they enjoyed sugar cookies and listened to her sweet little voice!
Here are some little "Hoppy Valentine's Day" bags that we made for all of our Valentine goodies. This little fella is missing the heart on his chest, but it's still super cute! I loved watching the students exchange cards and treats.

14 Days of Love! (day 6)
Day 6 of "14 days of Love" is another great giveaway!
Amanda from PlumDoodles is giving away a set of her amazing crayons. She is a teacher who also has her own business {I don't know how she does it}!
Listen to how she got started, "One day while cleaning out the "old" crayons from my first grade classroom (used for only 4 months!) and restocking the student's tubs with new, sharp crayons, I could not bear to throw the used crayons away. I knew I could do something with them - and so I did! Now, not only do I recycle crayons from the school where I teach, I also rescue crayons from local businesses, restaurants, and families. We prevent thousands of crayons from heading to the landfills, where they take years and years to decompose. And best of all, we give the "old" crayons a new life and a fun, new shape!
Plumdoodles was created in January of 2011. It was inspired by her son Owen's passion for recycling, and my passion for creativity.
I ordered a set of the "heart swirls" as part of a Valentine gift for my class. We'll keep them in the writing area with all of our other writing tools, and I know they're going to love them!

14 Days of Love! (day 5)
Sorry this has taken so long for me to post.
Just a bit of background info...I wanted to post this to raise awareness, and also to let you know about a few simple ways that you can show support and love to those in need. I also believe that teaching students to make good choices for their minds and bodies is something that I need to do more.
I have been looking forward to this day for a while. My co-workers knew it was coming soon, but none of them knew that today was "the day."

Another great project to help students realize how fortunate and blessed they are.. . "Pennies for Patients." It's so nice to work together to raise funds, and by the end of the 3 week collection period, the kids really do understand that "every penny counts."
This is a short "healthy heart" unit that I made. It includes a true/false activity for students to learn a little bit about their heart, 2 ideas for class books, and an art project. The page that has the "American Heart Association" ribbon can be used with red construction paper scraps. Students can tear the pieces and glue them to make their own ribbon which is great for fine motor skills and strengthening those little finger muscles.

14 Days of Love!
I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing weekend! We enjoyed some beautiful 70 degree weather this weekend, but by Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll be in the 20's (That's Texas for ya)!

Valentine Pen Pals
This February, I'm hosting a pen pal Valentine exchange! The project is open to any K-2 group. If you want to participate, here's what you have to do:
2. Include your name, school mailing address, and the grade level you teach.
I will place all of the teachers in a group (the number will depend on how many responses I receive-most likely it will be 20-25 cards). Then your class will create Valentine Cards for the other classes in your group (snail mail only).
The theme for this project will be cupcakes. Inside each of the cards, you can include information about your class, how you're celebrating Valentine's Day, and the things you LOVE about your school or grade level!
You will be responsible for shipping costs, and you might also be interested in skyping with another class too. If so, please mention that in your e-mail. The deadline to mail the cards will be Wednesday, February 9th to ensure that each class receives the cards on or before Valentine's Day.
I hope this project will serve as an extension to social studies as we learn about maps, the U.S. mail system, and Valentine's Day!
You will receive a confirmation e-mail and an excel document with information about your group once everything has been finalized. I will do my best to make sure that you get to correspond with teachers/students from a variety of locations! I hope you're able to join us in this fun Valentine project!

Valentine Sweets & Treats
