Snowman Literature and Writing

We completed this as a shared writing activity.  I left blanks for the students to review sight words.  The students wrote on individual marker boards and had a chance to fill in the missing words.

We have connected our writing to lots of my favorite winter literature!  I even have a snowman that glows in the dark.  I turn it on when we read "Snowmen at Night."

Here is a sample of some of our "expository" writing.  We are experts who know "how to" give instructions for others to follow!
how to make a sandwich

how to have a snowball fight

how to make a snow angel

how to make hot cocoa

We don't need this one often in Texas, but today was one of those days...how to stay warm on a freezing cold day!

Snowman ABC Order

Go to http://growingkinders.blogspot.com/ to see a picture.  Look under Kathleen's post about "snowmen."  I think the kinder teachers at my school got this idea from her!  It's so adorable!

This contest is for a "brand-new" book to add to your "winter literature" collection.   The winner will receive a book of choice from my favorite winter books which are listed in the document below.  All you have to do is post a comment with the title of one of your favorite winter books and tell how you like to use it in the classroom.  Share at least 1 extension activity for art, writing, math, science, or social studies.

The contest ends on New Year's Day at 12 noon.  Once I post the winner's name, they will have 24 hours to contact me via e-mail me.  Happy New Year to everyone!

Winter directional art

Winter Directional Art

This is one of my favorites!  I decided to use some extra pictures of my boys!  I just didn't have the heart to cut off Solomon's double chin, and yes you can probably see that Christian has crumbs all over his face!  But I still think these are so adorable!  I added the coffee filter to give it some extra flair.   The original project is actually "Eskimo" from the TLC "People" book.  I usually make these with the students and then let them write about their favorite things to do in winter.  We have also done a research project on Eskimo life.  Not sure what we'll do after we make them this year, but I'll take pictures of whatever we do!
