I hope everyone is having a fabulous week! My favorite parts of blogging are hosting "giveaways" and finding/sharing great resources. Today's post is another great giveaway featuring some teaching tools from Diane and Kelly, two first grade teachers who have recently entered the world of blogging.
I stumbled across their blog and resources a few weeks ago, and I'm so grateful that I did! Today's giveaway features one of their latest creations,
This unit is perfect for March and April, and it combines science with lots of wonderful literature. My favorite parts of the unit are the "Roy G. Biv" art activity and the "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" mini-book.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite weather related lesson is to have my students become weather forcasters each morning during calendar. We talk about the job of a meteorologist and how part of their job is to predict the temperature. They LOVE it. I even have a little tie and hat I let them wear : )

We already learned about space and clouds and one of my favorite activities was an art activity about the different types of clouds. We made three different "landscapes" on the same sheet of paper and then painted the clouds using cotton balls and different elements to represent the three main types of clouds!

I love to have my students predict what they think the weather will be & justify their predictions. For example, I think it will rain today because I see dark clouds in the sky. Then read the daily weather forecast.

There are so many fun things to do with science in the spring, but my all time favorite is our "wormology" lesson. The week of standardized testing I do my plant unit and include dirt, seeds and worms. I bring in nightcrawlers and have the students become "wormologists". They make observations about the worms and record their findings. It's so much fun to watch their reactions to the worms! The kids you think will never touch them let the crawl all over them and the others won't have a thing to do with it! Too fun!!

I just love taking down all the February stuff and putting up anything that has to do with Spring. One activity my kids love is making symmetrical butterflies.

My favorite weather activity is our weather reports. My class worked on collecting weather data twice a day throughout two months. We live in Florida where the temperature can begin in the 40s and end in the 80s. After recording our data, we compared the results on a graph. Through the process, students learned about wind speed (wind vanes), temperature (thermometer), precipitation, clouds (cloud in a bottle) and how to report the daily data. I will post pictures tonight!

I love to plant seeds with my kids in the spring. I plan on having them plan them before spring break...then as long as they are growing we will repot them into terracotta pots that we have painted for mothers day!

ReplyDeleteIn the spring, we plant pumpkin seeds saved from our jack o lantern in the fall. We keep a journal on our plants. We also do the lima beans in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel so the kids can see the exact growth that usually happens in the soil. They love it when their plant "outgrows" the bag! :o)

We did a science investigation today where we took our clipboards and took "scientist notes" about living and non living things outdoors. The kids conversations were soo cute! "Is a plant living? Well it needs sunlight...it needs air...It's living!" :)

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things to do in science in the spring is teach a unit on soil, rocks and seed-plant. We plant several different types of seeds in clear containers so we can see the roots growing. The kids love this and it is fun to compare the different size roots of the different plants.

My favorite unit to teach in the spring is my mini unit on bubbles! I love letting students experiment with all types of bubble solutions and bubble blowers to find the combination that makes the best bubbles. It is always a hit!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite weather activity would be the Rainbow Hair kids that we do....it is much like the Roy G Biv guy in their unit....but we paint the different colors of the rainbow on as hair. It goes with a very cute poem about Rainbow Hair.

My favorite Spring weather lesson involves a unit on wind and a STEM lesson. Students have to build a kite that can actually fly in the wind. It is soooooo much fun!

My favorite spring science activity is the seeds and planting lesson. We do the "will a seed sprout in the dark" lesson. The kids are always shocked that the seed sprouts.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite spring activities is our "Sprout Race." We place three different seeds in a baggie (inside a brightly colored folded napkin). We predict which seed will sprout first, record our observations each day, and graph results. I like to use bean, corn, and watermelon seeds. The kids love checking their seeds each day!

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite activites for Spring is reading It Looked Like Spilt Milk. Then each child drops a few drops of white tempra paint on a blue background and rubs it around. They open it and write about the "cloud" shape that they see. It shows off a great imagination and their good writing skills.

One thing I do with my second graders is to keep a weather journal for one week. I staple a booklet together on one page is a thermometer and on the page beside that one is a place to write and draw a picture. Together we watch a clip of the local weather and fill in the thermometer for today's high and write about the weather. I model what I would write for them and then they write their own and draw a picture to match the day's weather. We just finished these before spring break and they turned out really nice. They also decorate the front and call it "My Weather Journal" It is really an easy and fun activity.

ReplyDeleteWhen I taught kindergarten, I made a TV station learning center, complete with all the props needed for a news/weather cast. I used a bookshelf as the anchor desk, complete with stools for the "anchors." I used an old "rolling chalk/bulletin board" to post a large map of the US. The weatherman had a pointer and small weather icons to pin to the board for the weather "fronts." I gave them a pointer to use also. I made a video camera from a capri sun drink box and mounted it on a tripod, but later purchased a toy one to use. I made a microphone with the TV station name on it. Add a clip board for the anchors to use with their "news." There are numerous possibilities. There you have a great role-play center- WKID TV!

When learning about clouds I like using the book "It Looked Like Spilt Milk." Students could use white paint on blue construction paper to make clouds shaped like something of their choice and then label with "It looked like _______."
