Yesterday during math we discussed perimeter and area. We used Cheez-its to help us measure the area of various plane shapes. As an extension, we used "big" Cheez-its to help us make comparisons. We use Envisions math curriculum as our primary source, but we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance instruction. The kids absolutely loved using the Cheez-its!
We completed our independent practice with color tiles.
Here are a few additional measurement tools that we've used!
Finally, here is a fun math activity that we'll probably complete as a review activity on our spring party day. You need just a few items!
It's called "delicious dominoes." If you have any chocolate allergies, you'll need regular graham crackers.
Love your ideas. Check out my blog at

ReplyDeleteCute. We use Envisions too, but we didn't teach area or perimeter since they aren't in on cso's.

We use enVision for math, but that isn't in our program. It isn't a 1st grade standard for us, but I think it's strange how enVision has so many math units out there per grade level. Too bad they didn't make one really awesome one and spare us from recreating everything!
ReplyDeleteCute! We are getting ready for our measurement unit and this is just in time! THANKS for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHope you'll join us at the Monday Math Blog Hop! ;)
