Hey! I always love your activities, and as a first year 1st grade teacher, they are so helpful! I just have a quick question/clarification for this activity. Are these words homonyms or actually homophones? I was thinking they are homophones, but I definitely don't want to teach my kids incorrectly.
I found these definitions, "In linguistics, a homonym is one of a group of words that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meanings." "A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning."
What do you think?? Thanks, and keep up the good work!
I have often wondered that myself. I've heard them both, but never really looked into the differences. I'll have to do some research on that...I'll ask around and check the web...great question!
O.k. I talked this over with the reading specialist at my school, and they are not the same! I will update the page to say "homophone." Mrs. K from my school printed out a page with definitions and examples which made it much clearer. Thank you Cassie for bringing that to my attention.
Brooke! This is SO cute!
